1/3 of Americans are sleep deprived. The National Institutes of Health and The Public Good Projects reported that in 2014 35.5% of all Americans sleep less than 7 hours of night. It has been calculated that the current sleeping hour amount is 2 hours less than those who lived 50 years ago.
Sleep deprivation Percentage of Adolescents
According the the Journal of Psycho-social Nursing and Mental Health Services, Adolescents sleep at least 7 hours a night when the physiological needed amount of sleep for that age group is 9. It has been reported that 20-25% of these adolescents feel sleepy or tired during the day. It has been found that these unhealthy sleeping habit continue unto adulthood. 9
Sleep Deprivation Percentage of College Students
It has been reported that 2/3 of college student exhibit sleeping disturbances. 1/3 of college students exhibit sleeping difficulties. Only 11% of students have been reported to sleep to have healthy sleeping habits including sleeping the average 8-9 hours. 10
Due to sleep deprivation, many individuals, independent of gender, race, or age, have fell asleep during the day or nodded off while driving at least once in the past month due to sleep deprivation.
